It provides filmmakers with an opportunity to share their work with other artists and the public, across genres and in a variety of lengths, in a space dedicated to discovery, discussion and inspiration. Each screening will be followed by a question and answer session with creators, with informal conversation and networking.

Program:

The Silken Faces; 40 min; 2014
Filmmaker: Akbar Nazemi (Cineworks)

In 2006, a heater caught fire in an elementary school in Dorudzan village in Fars province and eight children including six girls and two boys were severely burned. When the same problem emerged as the root of similar tragic events in other schools, Akbar Nazemi set about investigating a phenomenon that illuminates a dark side to Iran’s education infrastructure.

Akbar Nazemi was a young photographer who came back home from studying photography in Dusseldorf when the Iranian Revolution began in June 1978. Renowned for his photography, documenting the reaction to twenty-five years of rule by The Shah of Iran, as well as the first mass demonstration of the rise of militant Islam, Nazemi’s practice has also encompassed documentary and dramatic film for over two decades. He has lived alternately in Iran and Vancouver since the late 1980s and is currently based in Tehran.

Similitude; 7 min 10 sec; 2016;
Producer, co-writer, co-star: Helenna Santos (WIFTV)
Director: Tim Guzman

Similitude is a love story between two women and the past lives they’ve shared together. It is an exploration of humanity's longing for connection and ventures into the world of dreams vs reality with a story dancing in the space between past, present, and future. Made for only $400, this 7 minute experimental short film accumulated over 30 hours of driving to many different haunting locations in California’s arid deserts and the filming was done on random shoot days over the course of a year with a crew of 2 maximum at any given time, 100% guerilla style.

Best Experimental Film:
Los Angeles Independent Artist Film Festival
Official Selection:
Hollyshorts Film Festival; Zero Film Festival; AMFM Fest;

Mokan; 26 min; 2012
Filmmaker: Mohammad Ali Rakhshani (Cineworks)

In Baluchestan province, South East Iran, marital tradition prioritizes fertility and fosters expectation that married men should divorce women not able to bear children. Mokan tells the story of a couple whose relationship was pressurized by the tyranny of this tradition, and chose to flee their community for a life in the desert, nurturing trees – which they name and treat with the passion of loving parents – in an oasis of their own idyllic togetherness.

Winner: Fifth Green International Film Festival, France (2014)
Winner: TRT International Film Festival of Turkey (2012)

Mohammad Ali Rakhshani is a documentary filmmaker from Baluchistan, Iran, with a diploma degree in mechanical engineering and bachelors and masters degrees in filmmaking and cinema. His films are poetic meditations on the challenges and beauties of tradition in his home country and region.
