For almost twenty years, the IGNITE! Festival has boasted a plethora of stupendous young artists and given dozens of young people the opportunity to work with one of British Columbia's largest theatre companies: The Cultch. These bold paragons of youth, ranging from ages 13-29, have been responsible for every aspect of the festival, from administration, to tech, to the peformance itself, which contained young artists with incredibly diverse talents ranging from circus to live music to spoken word.
And now it's back for yet another year of fun!
Join us at the Cultch's flagship Historic Theatre from May 16-20, 2017, for a 5-day festival representing the tremendous creativity and enthusiasm of our wonderful performers, and the effervescent Youth Panel — the all-youth governing body that is solely responsible for making IGNITE! happen.
Kicking the festival off on Tuesday the 16th, we have a night dedicated to Spice Cowboys: what happens when the Wild West, Space and, you guessed it, the Spice Girls collide in a beautiful mess of glitter, leather and slang.
Following that, on Wednesday the 17th, we have the controversial Housing Crisis night. Need I say more?
Maintaining a safe distance from it's predecessor is Safety Thirdsday on the 18th! Come out for a wild night of music, laughs, and lectures on appropriate safety protocol. Make sure to wear hardhats and steel-toed boots. And always remember IGNITE!'s motto: Safety Third. Don't ask us what comes first or second.
On Friday the 19th we're having a Masquerade Ball! Not actually — but we'd love to have you join us for a night of mystery, intrigue and gaudy colours. There'll even be a craft table! What more could you want?
Finally, we're ending IGNITE! 2017 with a relaxing night in the style of the 1920s. Jazz, the prohibition- Wait, did I say 1920s? I meant 1,920,000 B.C. — that's right, get out your bowler hat and dinosaur costume for the finale of IGNITE! 2017: Roaring '20s.
Tickets are $10 for adults, but only $2 for youth. Tell your friends!
IGNITE! (The Culltch) is held on occupied Indigenous land belonging to the Coast Salish Peoples. This includes the territories of the Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh-ulh, Stó:lo & Tsleil-Waututh nations.
IGNITE! could not happen without the support of our generous sponsors Coast Capital Savings, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Georgia Straight, and the province of British Columbia. Their contribution to the program cannot be overstated.
