Born and trained in Japan, Alcvin is one of the foremost teachers and performers of the shakuhachi, Japanese bamboo flute, in North America today. Alcvin has taught and performed all over the US, Europe, and Japan and pursues an active solo as well as collaborative career; and has shared the stage with many distinguished artists. A composer and multi-instrumentalist, Ramos also explores playing with musical traditions and genres. Alcvin's mandate is to educate the public about Japanese musical and spiritual arts and to share its beauty for the enrichment of our community.
For Alcvin, the process of shakuhachi is very fascinating exprerience of silence and sound. When you begin playing the flute, to make a sound is very difficult. But with constant practice, one learns how to still the mind and develop control of the body and mind to develop the ability to use your breath as a blade to carve the silence with sound from the bamboo flute. There is a well of forms and techniques to learn from tradition, but eventually, you let it all go and just flow with the moment. Letting go of all attachment, accessing deeper levels of the heart through points of transition between thoughts, and just flowing with bamboo and breath. Just blow.
