What an amazing year for our group of supporters, volunteers, activists, and members! We are officially inviting you to Raise the Rates' Annual THANK YOU event--this year with an important twist, asking ourselves WHAT'S NEXT?!
This year we saw our successful art project We Can't Afford Poverty launched all over the city, an amazing welfare food challenge, a mock funeral for April 1st, and generally more news coverage on poverty than we've seen before. Now we potentially have a new government that's at least ~talking~ about rates-- and we also have a new organizer for our campaign! raisetherates.org/2017/06/06/welcome-our-new-organizer/
This is the perfect time for us to celebrate our community of friends and supporters, and to ask ourselves, what's next?
So please, bring yourself and a keen friend or two and join us in discussion about where Raise the Rates needs to go next. New petition? More protests? Rallies? Movie nights? Workshops? Info panels? Rent one of those planes-with-a-message and fly it over city hall constantly? I don't know--but maybe you do!
7pm at Grandview Baptist Church at 1st Ave and Commercial Drive. There will be tea and desserts, including a famous delicious you-don't-wanna-miss-this cheesecake!
please RSVP as soon as possible so we know how much dessert to make.
transit tickets available for those who require them.
— Raise the Rates acknowledges that we are organizing, living, and resisting on unceded Coast Salish territories, specifically of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations. Poverty is carefully created colonial policy, with disproportionate effects on Indigenous nations. We strive to reduce barriers to welfare and create a better social welfare net for all.
