On Thursday Aug 3rd, kick off your Pride Celebrations at VIVO Media Arts Centre, where we will be hosting a screening of LGBTQ works from our collection!

The star of the evening is a newly edited reel of vintage queer TV from our archive of the West End queer cable series, Gayblevision, selected by Karen Knights & Casey Wei, to be followed by recent works by queer-identified filmmaker/video artists Clark Nikolai, Thirza Cuthand, Jae Woo Kang, and Kristin Li.

Admission is by donation. We'll be serving Pink Dream cocktails as the sun goes down! Limited edition VIVO Pride Pins for the first 50 people.

Gayblevision was Canada’s first TV program made “for gay people by gay people” produced through the West End Community Cable Network between 1980-1986. Its members-cum-journalists covered the local LGBTQ community and culture, from disco parties at Hamburger Mary’s to Queer art at the Helen Pitt Gallery, and conducted interviews with politicians and cultural icons, providing real-life insight into the formation of the Pride movement and the impact of AIDS.

Following a brief intermission, the evening will conclude with 4 short works by LGBTQ video-artists/filmmakers working today with themes of sexuality. “Todd is a Window Washer” by Clark Nikolai (2016) is an elegant, straightforward documentary about a window washer named Todd, as he meticulously preps for his mundanely-dangerous job on the rooftop of a high-rise. In “2 Spirit Introductory Special $19.99”(2017), Thirza Cuthand stars in this playful infomercial advertising knowledge support for Walter William’s seminal text, The Spirit and the Flesh: Sexual Diversity in American Indian Culture. Jae Woo Kang's «Rosa Rugosa» (2013) is a tender and thoughtful depiction of a gay man's gender insecurities. “Two Snakes” (2015) by Kristin Li is a primarily animated work that unpacks sublimated lesbian desire in the famous Chinese legend, Madame White Snake.
