Lund, British Columbia. Before the recent tragedy propelled this small town (pop. 300) into the national headlines, it was best known as the gateway to Desolation Sound. About as far north as you could drive up the west coast, it became a haven for war resisters and a magnet for hippies looking for they-knew-not-what. With little in the way of resources they built their own homes (surprisingly, most are still standing though few are entirely finished) and learned to farm and fish.
Together these drop-outs fashioned a bohemian community which is in many ways a microcosm for Boomers everywhere — albeit with less reliable plumbing. This affectionate portrait draws on vintage 8mm and 16mm film, photographs, original artwork and music created by those who were there to convey how some folks set about creating a genuinely alternative lifestyle, and what they learned along the way.
