Rich with bold brass and hypnotic percussion, Polyrhythmics' latest album, Caldera, showcases the instrumental eight-piece's impossibly tight grooves and virtuosic musicianship as they tear through a singular blend of funk, soul, psychedelic rock, R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat. Calling to mind everything from Antibalas and the Dap-Kings to The Meters and Fela Kuti, it's without a doubt their strongest work to date, merging the infectious power of their live show with a sleek and nuanced studio sophistication.
The palette for the hard-driving modern afro-psycho-beat sound is built around the relentless rhythm of Grant Schroff and Lalo Bello, the heart thumping bass lines of Jason Gray, the intricate phrasings of Ben Bloom’s guitar, the searing avalanche of keyboard colors from Nathan Spicer and the melodic hooks and soaring solos from the horn section comprised of Scott Morning, Art Brown and Elijah Clark.
Coco Jafro brings together the schools of Funk, Soul, Jazz, and Afrobeat creating a unique mashup that transports you to a place that liberates your soul, evokes your primal spirit and ignites an electricity that lingers within your body.
