Lecture: Josh Yiu / Found in Translation: Lui Shou Kwan’s Understanding of Postwar American Art
Saturday, January 13, 3pm
Room 4 East
This lecture by curator and writer Josh Yiu will chart Lui Shou Kwan’s (1919–1975) profound knowledge of post-war American art through Lui’s practices as an artist and educator. Lui is best known for his abstract ink paintings, which emerged from his extensive knowledge of Chinese art history and traditional painting techniques.
Using Liu’s personal annotations to the translation of Modern American Painting and Sculpture (1965) by renowned art historian Samuel Hunter, Yiu will explore how the artist’s visionary ideas about beauty and form revamped Chinese painting practices for a global audience.
Free for Members or with Gallery Admission. Seating is first come, first served.
Presented in conjunction with "空/ Emptiness: Emily Carr and Lui Shou Kwan," on view at the Vancouver Art Gallery from December 16, 2017 to April 7, 2018.
