Turning Point Ensemble & PuSh International Performing Arts Festival present:
RADIO REWRITE: The Music of Jonny Greenwood, Steve Reich, Olivier Messiaen & Christopher Butterfield
Tickets: $30 adult / $15 students (plus service charges)
Radio Rewrite features the compositions of the extraordinary lead guitarist of Radiohead Jonny Greenwood in tandem with Steve Reich's Radio Rewrite, a recent work of the master minimalist American composer based on music from Radiohead, and music of one of the most visionary and influential composers of the twentieth century, Olivier Messiaen. Jonny Greenwood's fascination with the 1920's French electronic instrument, the ondes martenot, will be on full display as Turning Point Ensemble along with ondes martenot virtuoso Estelle Lemire perform his works Smear, Setting up Arrows, Self Portrait with Seven Fingers, Miniature and 88 for solo piano. One of Greenwood's primary influences as a teenager was the French composer Messiaen of whom he said: «Messiaen was my first connection to classical music. He was still alive when I was 15, and for whatever reason I felt I could equate him with my other favourite bands.» Turning Point Ensemble will perform music by Messiaen including arrangements of his famous ondes composition Fête des belles eaux. The concert will also be highlighted by a Vancouver premiere of Steve Reich's Radio Rewrite for two pianos, two percussion and ensemble. Reich describes the connection to Radiohead: «Radio Rewrite is in five movements played without pause. The first, third and fifth are fast and based on ...Radiohead's… Jigsaw and the second and fourth are slow and based on Everything.» The concert will also include a world premiere of a work written especially for this concert by the unclassifiable Victoria composer Christopher Butterfield.
