Greek Summer Fest on Boundary
4541 Boundary Road, Vancouver, British Columbia V5R2N5
The Dolphin World Jazz Ensemble is a varied group of friends that love to play jazz. All the musicians who participate under the Dolphin banner are accomplished musicians in their own right, but get together to share their diverse talents in a setting that ranges from a duo to a sextet. For this event we chose to be an instrumental quartet, backing the very talented Jewal Maxwell, songstress extraordinaire.
Jewal Maxwell a is vibrant and exciting vocalist, well known in music circles here and abroad, having shared her vocal talents in Caribbean resorts, aboard cruise ships and more recently, here in Vancouver at various jazz venues.
Accompanying her on saxophones is James Hill, who is a music teacher, and is also well known in jazz circles in the Lower Mainland. His range of musical talents include jazz to classical music and has performed for decades in various venues from small groups to big jazz orchestras, from community gigs to the symphony orchestra.
Laying down the bass line for the group is Mark Bender, another veteran in the field of music for over 40 years having played acoustic and electric bass in various jazz, classical and dance band settings. He has shared his musical talents here and abroad, in Germany and Japan, and has several recording credits.
Richard Welsh who performed at this event last year, is back this year with his «tasty» rhythmic interpretations, He started first in a Scottish Pipe band, then moving through various genres of music focusing on rock and pop, and moving on to funk, jazz, and jazz fusion.
Weaving all these considerable talents together into an ongoing musical tapestry is Francis Fernandes, piano player and group leader. He entered the world of music in Africa while in his teens, playing guitar in a dance band. He moved to the Piano a few years later and was captivated by jazz. Since then, he has honed his craft, playing in various venues, including in the Vancouver Jazz festival jams.
